Dr. D. Scott Fortune was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky in the 20 bed hospital where his grandmother was a labor-delivery nurse. Dr. Fortune grew up in East Tennessee, living in Clinton and later in Knoxville.
Dr. Fortune attended Emory University at Atlanta and graduated from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1993; during his fourth year of medical school he received the Surgical Clerkship Award. Dr. Fortune completed his surgical internship and training in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Vanderbilt University. He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and a is Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.
He has two children, Lucas and Anna, and his wife Mary Ellen has two children, Rebecca and Aaron. His hobbies include physical fitness such as core conditioning and spin biking, reading (especially historical and literary fiction) and traveling; his favorite travel stops include London, Scotland and Ireland.
While Dr. Fortune practices all areas of general otolaryngology, he has recently shifted his focus to rhinology and along with Dr. Bryant, is a Center of Excellence Trainer for Stryker ENT. Dr. Fortune hosts monthly peer-to-peer training sessions for visiting physicians to teach them the latest techniques of minimally invasive office based sinus procedures. Other areas of special interest for his practice include allergy, asthma, skin cancer and industrial hearing loss.
Dr. Fortune is the medical director for Providence Surgery Center in Mount Juliet and serves on their medical executive committee; he also serves on the performance improvement committee at Summit Surgery Center in Hermitage. Dr. Fortune is active in organized medicine with memberships in the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy and the American Rhinologic Society.
